What is ISTEP? ISTEP is a program that will help employers in B.C. get the skilled workers they need by matching them up with immigrants who have experience in construction or who want to work in the construction industry. The intent is to provide skilled trades' people for employers by helping immigrants build careers in the industry. So often the valuable skills immigrants bring with them are lost to the workforce. ISTEP was developed through a partnership between the BC Construction Association (BCCA) and the Construction Sector Council (CSC) and is funded by the Government of Canada's Foreign Credential Recognition Program. ISTEP is being managed by the BCCA and its regional associations, enabling access to contractors and construction jobs across the province. How does it work? Immigrants who have experience or interest in the construction trades will be matched to employers who need workers. This will be done by job coaches located in four regions of the province. They will assess employment potential, coordinate work placements that match skills and experience, and provide ongoing support for both workers and employers. Immigrants placed with employers will have a standard of English that ensures they are capable of doing their job well and safely. Only candidates assessed as job-ready will be matched with employers. What are the benefits to me? Job coaches are qualified trades people who understand your needs and they will be a constant link between employers and workers.
